
High-achieving undergraduates majoring in Religious Studies can apply for the new Accelerated Masters Program in the department. If accepted, 12 credit hours (4 seminars) in the MA in Religion in Culture program will count for both their BA and MA degrees.
Eligible applicants during their junior year must
- Complete 90 credit hours
- Be a Religious Studies major
- Earn a 3.7 UA GPA
- Apply to the graduate program
Timeline
- Apply to join AMP before senior year
- Take 4 MA seminars (2 per semester) during senior year, including REL 501 Social Theory and Religious Studies and REL 502 Public Humanities and Religious Studies
- Graduate with a BA, counting the 4 seminars towards the BA
- Complete 24 additional MA credit hours that combine with the 4 MA seminars through AMP
- Graduate with an MA in Religion in Culture.
The MA in Religion in Culture extends the work in the REL BA program, emphasizing the combination of digital skills and critical theory. The MA prepares students not only for continuing graduate work in religious studies and related disciplines but also for careers outside of academia. Alumni of the MA program have pursued careers in university administration, museums, and student life, as well as technical fields like architecture and medical transcription. Students interested in pursuing PhDs have also been accepted to a variety of prestigious PhD programs around the country, including UNC Chapel Hill, Princeton, Iowa, and Ohio State.
