DVD
App. 148 minutes
2018-21
2001: A Space Odyssey is a countdown to tomorrow, a road map to human destiny, a quest for the infinite. It is a dazzling, Academy Award-winning visual achievement, a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. It may be the masterwork of director Stanley Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke)…and it will likely excite, inspire and enthrall for generations. To begin his voyage in to the future, Kubrick visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever conceived) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted realms of space, perhaps even into immortality. “Open the pod bay doors, HAL.” Let the awe and mystery of a journey unlike any other begin.

Beyond Good and Evil
DVD
App. 35 minutes
2004-121
The belief that “good triumphs over evil” resonates deeply in our psyche through religious, cultural, and political discourses. It is also a common theme in the entertainment media where the struggle between good and evil is frequently resolved through violence. The potential negative impact of media violence on children has long been a public concern. It is even more troubling when U.S. military violence, both in the news and in the entertainment, is often glorified as heroic and patriotic. Children’s worlds of fantasy and reality collided when our political leaders, in response to the September 11th tragedy, simplified the complex international relationships into a fight between good and evil. The Bush administration used the narrative strategically—and the news media perpetuated it with enthusiasm—pumping up patriotism and generating public support for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. This video examines how the “good and evil” rhetoric, in both the entertainment and the news media, has helped children to dehumanize the enemies, justify their killing and treat the suffering of innocent civilians as necessary sacrifice. The interviews include media scholars (Robert Jenson, Robin Andersen), child psychologists (Diane Levin, Nancy Carlsson-Paige), teachers (Merrie Najimy, Brian Wright), educators (Eli Newberger and Betty Burkes), and the children themselves.

Constructing Public Opinion
DVD
App. 32 minutes
2004-123
The media regularly use public opinion polls in their reporting of important news stories. But how exactly do they report them and to what end? In this insightful and accessible interview, Professor Justin Lewis demonstrates the way in which polling data are themselves used by the media to not just reflect what Americans think but instead to construct public opinion itself. Addressing vital issues (e.g., the role the media play in “manufacturing consent” for political elites, what polls really tell us about public opinion, what Americans actually think about politics), Constructing Public Opinion provides a new way to think about the relationship between politics, media and the public. Exploding the myth that most Americans are moderate or conservative, Constructing Public Opinion demonstrates the way in which political elites help to promote the military industrial complex and how the media sustains belief in an electoral system with a built-in bias against the interests of ordinary people. Well illustrated with graphics and many examples of media coverage, it is the first film of its kind to present a critical analysis of media and public opinion.

Control Room
DVD
App. 86 minutes
2005-13
In the spring of 2003, just before President Bush declared that the United States would go to war with Iraq, documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim and her crew set up their cameras inside Al Jazeera, the satellite news network for the Arab world. Though US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld accuses Al Jazeera of lying in its news reports, CONTROL ROOM tells a different story. Candid interviews with some of Al Jezeera’s leaders–like Sudanese journalist Hassan Ibrahim who formerly headed the BBC Arab News service, and senior producer Samir Khader who talks openly about his respect for American values– offer an Arab perspective on the US and the war. Meanwhile, Americans such as NBC correspondent David Shuster and Central Command press officer Lt. Josh Rushing, both working in Qatar, offer another point of view. Through various interviews, Al Jazeera is presented as a grass- roots organization devoted to being an independent news source. In addition, it is not afraid of showing the brutality of war. The station airs shocking footage of the devastation caused by US bombings, showing the resultant carnage of Iraqi civilians, Iraqi soldiers, as well as US soldiers. The Al Jazeera reporters dissect US news reports, which rarely contain coverage of this nature, pointing out how information is packaged to exclude certain truths. When asked her opinion of objectivity, Al Jazeera producer Deema Khatib calls it a mirage, which is a powerful statement about the foggy nature of truth as interpreted by the media. A fascinating look inside Al Jazeera, CONTROL ROOM will challenge viewers to question what to believe from the news they receive.

Working with a theme and history that’s obviously dear to her heart, first-time writer-director Julie Dash’s exquisitely alive film chronicles the last days of the Gullah, an Americanized West African people in danger of losing their identity. Dash makes up for some overly schematic dialogue and an occasionally pokey pace with some strong performances (particularly Cora Lee Day as the sternly matriarchal Nana) and an absolutely wonderful visual sense (kudos should also go to her ace cinematographer Arthur Jafa, whose dazzlingly sumptuous imagery surely inspired Jonathan Demme’s later Beloved). A rapturously textured, wholly mesmerizing glimpse into the Gullah culture.

If you’re thinking about people and Islam, and about that part of the wold, those are the words you constantly have to use. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
DVD
App. 108 minutes
2005-35
Spencer Tracy’s last performance was in this well-meaning, handsome film by Stanley Kramer about a pair of white parents (Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) trying to make sense of their daughter’s impending marriage to an African American doctor (Sidney Poitier). The film has been knocked over the years for padding conflict and stoking easy liberalism by making Poitier’s character in every socioeconomic sense a good catch: But what if Kramer had made this stranger a factory worker? Would the audience still find it as easy to accept a mixed-race relationship? But there’s no denying the drawing power of this movie, which gets most of its integrity from the stirring performances of Tracy and Hepburn. When the former (who had been so ill that the production could not get completion insurance) gives a speech toward the end about race, love, and much else, it’s impossible not to be affected by the last great moment in a great actor’s life and career.

But Rob’s business isn’t the only thing in his life that’s floundering–his needle skips the love groove when his longtime girlfriend Laura (newcomer Iben Hjejle) walks out on him. And this forces him to examine his past failed attempts at romance the only way he knows how!

Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear, and the Selling of American Empire
DVD
App. 64 minutes
2004-124
Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home. The documentary places the Bush Administration’s false justifications for war in Iraq within the larger context of a two-decade struggle by neoconservatives to dramatically increase military spending in the wake of the Cold War, and to expand American power globally by means of military force. At the same time, the documentary argues that the Bush Administration has sold this radical and controversial plan for aggressive American military intervention by deliberately manipulating intelligence, political imagery, and the fears of the American people after 9/11.

Hot Coffee

You may think you know the case of the woman who sued McDonald’s over spilled coffee. Or do you? More than 15 years after making international news, the case continues to be cited as an example of citizens who use “frivolous” lawsuits to take unfair advantage of the American legal system. But is that an accurate portrayal of the facts? An eye-opening documentary with jaw-dropping revelations, Hot Coffee exposes how corporations spend millions on propaganda campaigns to distort our views of lawsuits–forever changing the civil justice system. By examining the impact of tort reform on the lives of ordinary citizens, the film shows how Americans give up their Constitutional rights in many ways without knowing it–for example, by voting for caps on damages or signing away their rights in contracts. Through interviews with politicians, judges, lawyers and ordinary citizens, first-time filmmaker and former public-interest lawyer Susan Saladoff delves into the facts of four cases to tear apart the conventional wisdom about “jackpot justice.”

I Heart Huckabees
DVD
App. 106 minutes
2005-33
Billed as “an existential comedy,” I Heart Huckabees is a flawed yet endearingly audacious screwball romp that dares to ponder life’s biggest questions. Much of director David O. Russell’s philosophical humor is dense, talky, and impenetrable, leading critic Roger Ebert to observe that “it leaves the viewer out of the loop,” and suggesting that Russell’s screenplay (written with his assistant, Jeff Baena) is admirably bold yet frustratingly undisciplined. Russell’s ideas are big but his expression of them is frenetic, centering on the unlikely pairing of an environmentalist (Jason Schwartzman) and a firefighter (Mark Wahlberg) as they depend on existential detectives (Lily Tomlin, Dustin Hoffman) and a French nihilist (Isabelle Huppert) to make sense of their existential crises, brought on (respectively) by a two-faced chain-store executive (Jude Law) and his spokesmodel girlfriend (Naomi Watts), and the aftermath of 9/11’s terrorism. No brief description can do justice to Russell’s comedic conceit; you’ll either be annoyed and mystified or elated and delighted by this wacky primer for coping with 21st century lunacy. Deserving of its mixed reviews, I Heart Huckabees is an audacious mess, like life itself, and accepting that is the key to enjoying both.

  • Taoism: A Question of Balance-China: In our search for Chinese religious experience, we go to Taiwan. A whole pantheon of gods both local and imported from the mainland are worshipped in thousands of Buddhist and Taoist temples. Several strands make up the religious life of the village: a Confucian respect for past and the ancestors, the cosmic pattern of the Tao that permeates all levels of existence and manifests itself through oracles, the local gods who dispense justice and favors, and the hungry ghosts of the dead who have to be placated.
  • Alternative Lifestyles in California: West Meets East: The spiritual impulse of the time steps beyond the boundaries of religious tradition- so wrote Theodore Roszak, spokesman for the counter-culture, who is Ronald Eyre’s guide to the new religious concerns of people living in the San Francisco Bay area. Here religious ideas and life styles of East and West mingle and people brought up in a largely Christian cultural climate look East to Taoism and Hinduism for inspiration.
  • Reflection on the Long Search: In this episode Ronald Eyre asks himself some questions. It is not a film in which he hands out diplomas to believers of the religion that pleased him best. The search, for him, began long before this series got off the ground and will continue long into the future. There are no winners and no losers. There is an element of personal stocktaking, however, and before doing so, Eyre reveals his own background, the mental furniture that he of necessity packs whenever he goes on search.

It’s the early 1960s, and an adolescent Jewish boy (Pierre Boulanger), mostly left to his own devices by an ineffectual father, makes friends with the worldly wise Persian man (Sharif) who runs a small neighborhood grocery. The kid’s fumbling experiences with sexual curiosity are the reliable stuff of many a French movie, but the unlikely friendship of young Jew and old Muslim make for an offbeat through-line. Francois Dupeyron’s film shifts gears in its final section, moving from its flavorful location and into the wide-open spaces, and it goes on too long with too many pieces of advice. But overall this is a warm and winning experience, with Omar Sharif holding an instructive class in the power of understated movie-star charisma.

The Wisdom of Faith with Huston Smith
DVD
2005-36

  • Christianity and Judaism: Because we are removed from spirituality today, Smith believes we find it difficult to understand the true meaning of Christianity. Smith explains that Christianity wouldn’t have existed if its “spirit had not been real and dense and palpable and evident to everyone around.” Smith finds the intimate relationship between the Jews and their God “a living conversation between the human and the divine that goes on generation after generation.” Through his son-in-law, Smith came to admire the beauty of the weekly Jewish shabbat, and when his daughter died, he found solace in Jewish mourning rituals. (57 minutes, color)
  • Confucianism: Born in China of missionary parents, Smith learned about Chinese language, culture, and religion while growing up near Shanghai. Smith explains how the intertwining of opposites is key to understanding the great religions of China—Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Smith shows that Eastern religions provide “an emphasis on direct experience and a method for attaining that.” He introduces yoga, which he has been practicing for 50 years, as one such method. (56 minutes, color)
  • Hinduism and Buddhism: This program explores the two great religions to come from India. “The historian of religion can find almost anything he wants in India, enacted with intensity. What remains is to carry its insight into everyday life.” Smith uncovered the mysteries of multiphonic chanting among Tibetan lamas, previously unknown in the West. Characterizing these chants as “the holiest sound I have ever heard,” Smith reveals the chanting to be a form of meditation. Smith spent ten weeks with a Zen master silently meditating 8 hours a day, where he derived insights that help the viewer understand the way of Zen Buddhism. (56 minutes, color)
  • Islam: Smith discovered Islam as an adult, and became enamored with Islamic conceptions of order, justice, mercy, and compassion. He still prays five times a day as Muslims do. The Sufis opened the doors of Islam to Smith. Through their trance-inducing dances, these mystics bring God into the immediate moment. Smith and Moyers discuss misconceptions about Islam held in the West today. (56 minutes, color)
  • A Personal Philosophy: This program summarizes and distills what we have learned about the great religions in this series. Smith’s lifetime of experience and study helps him to go beyond the differences between each tradition. He shows how the cultivation of virtues valued by all religions—intelligence, compassion, creativity, truth, beauty, and goodness—can lead to transcendence. In the many faces of God he has contemplated, Huston Smith sees no conflict. He believes them all to be windows on the same transcendent truths. All wisdom traditions ultimately make the same claim, that everything emanates from an absolute perfection. (56 minutes, color)

Zen: In Search of Enlightenment
DVD
App. 120 minutes

Zen-the Japanese form of Buddhism-is the determining element in the Japanese character. It is not a matter of belief in a deity, a conviction that certain acts incur divine punishment and others divine reward; rather, it is a mind-set and a way of life that stresses the most rigorous kinds of discipline and self-abnegation and fosters a single-minded devotion to one’s goal and unquestioning obedience to one’s superior. To watch a postulate monk sit without making any visible response to being whacked on the shoulder with a two-by-four-and to know that Japanese business men commonly go on retreat to such monasteries-is bound to give American businessmen and women pause.
